Autumn is my favourite time of year for meeting someone new. The air is fresh, the light is soft and the parks around Leeds are at their prettiest. A walk takes the pressure off a first date: you're side by side, there's always something to look at, and it's easy to end early or stretch it out if the conversation is flowing. Here are some of my favourite places to try.
Why a walk works so well
Sitting across a table can feel a bit like an interview. Walking is more relaxed. Silences feel natural, and you can chat about the trees, the ducks or the dog that just ran past. It also works for every age, which matters on a site like Go Leeds Dating, where people are looking for something genuine at all stages of life.
Big parks close to the city
Roundhay Park
Two lakes, wide lawns and woodland paths in north east Leeds. The autumn colours can be lovely from October into November. Stick to the main paths and there's usually somewhere nearby for a hot drink.
Golden Acre Park
A leafy park at Adel with a lake, gardens and wooded walks. There are plenty of benches, so it's easy to stop and chat. Check what's open before you go.
Temple Newsam
Grand parkland on the eastern edge of the city, with long paths and lots of space. It's a good choice if you'd like a longer, unhurried wander. Check opening times and what's on before you travel.
Water and woods
The Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath
Flat, easy and close to the city centre. Leaves on the water and a gentle pace make it a lovely low key option. Towpaths can be slippery after rain, so wear sensible shoes.
The Meanwood Valley Trail
A wooded path on the north side of the city that feels surprisingly far from the traffic. Good for a quiet chat, and handy if you live in or near Meanwood or Headingley.
Otley Chevin
Woodland paths and views over Wharfedale. It's a little more effort than a park stroll, so it suits people who enjoy a bit of fresh air and a gentle climb. Pick an easy route for a first meeting.
A little further out
If you'd like to make a half day of it, the grounds at Harewood House or a walk on Ilkley Moor both reward the journey. Ilkley Moor can be exposed and the weather changes quickly, so it's better kept for a second or third date. Check travel, opening times and any tickets before you set off.
Make the most of it
- Plan a warm finish. Pick a café or pub nearby so you can sit down with a hot drink afterwards.
- Mind the light. The days shorten fast, so aim for the middle of the day and be back before dusk.
- Dress for the weather. Boots, a waterproof and a smile go a long way.
- Keep it short. An hour is plenty for a first meeting. If it goes well, you'll have a reason for a second.
- Stay safe. Meet somewhere public, make your own way there and tell a friend your plans. Our guide to dating safely has more.
